Birth Doula FAQ's
What does a birth doula do?
A birth doula provides emotional, physical, and informational support throughout pregnancy, labour, and birth. While your doctor or midwife focuses on the medical side of your care, a doula focuses on supporting you. That might mean helping you understand your options, suggesting comfort measures during labour, and providing calm, continuous support throughout your entire birth experience.A doula is also there to support your partner. My role isn't to replace them, but to help them feel confident, involved, and supported so they can be the best support person possible for you.
And sometimes, my biggest role is simply to hold space. Birth can feel overwhelming, unpredictable, and emotional. Sometimes the most valuable thing I can do is be a calm, reassuring presence in the room, helping you both feel safe, supported, and confident as you welcome your baby.

What is included when I hire you as my birth doula?
Every birth is unique, but generally my birth doula support includes:
• Unlimited phone, text, and email support from the time you hire me. Whether you need to talk through a decision, have a question, or just need some reassurance, I'm always happy to help.
• Two to three prenatal visits where we'll get to know each other and prepare for your birth. This is your time to ask questions, talk through what you've learned in your prenatal classes, discuss the different choices you may face during pregnancy, labour, and birth, and figure out what feels right for your family. We'll also practise comfort measures and make sure both you and your partner feel prepared and supported.
• Continuous support throughout labour and birth. I'll join you whenever you need me, which often means supporting you at home during early labour before heading to the hospital (if that's your birth plan).
• I'll remain with you after your baby is born until things have settled, you've had time to meet your baby, everyone has had something to eat, and you're feeling comfortable.
• A postpartum visit in your home during the first week after birth to check in, answer questions, and support you as you begin your new chapter.

How many birth cleints do you take per month
I intentionally keep my doula practice very small. Birth is unpredictable, and I want to be able to fully support my clients while still being present for my own family. By taking only a limited number of births, I know that when you need me, I can truly be there for you.
Because of that, I like to meet with prospective clients before we make any commitments. Birth is such a personal experience, and it's important to me that we both feel we're a good fit and can build a relationship of trust.

When should I hire a doula?
Ideally, as early in your pregnancy as possible. Hiring your doula early gives us more time to get to know each other, prepare for your birth, and allows you to take advantage of the support I offer throughout your pregnancy.
That said, it's never too late to reach out! If I have availability, I'm always happy to meet with families later in pregnancy. Whether you're 12 weeks or 38 weeks, if you think having a doula would benefit you, I'd love to chat.

Do you offer postpartum support?
Not at the moment. While postpartum support is something I'm passionate about, I'm currently focusing on massage therapy and birth doula services. It's definitely something I hope to offer in the future!
Can I combine doula support with massage therapy?
Absolutely! Many of my doula clients also choose to receive massage therapy throughout their pregnancy, and the two services complement each other beautifully.
Massage therapy supports the physical changes of pregnancy, while doula care focuses on preparing you and your partner for birth and supporting you through the experience. If you happen to choose both, the regular massage appointments simply give us extra opportunities to connect, answer questions as they come up, and check in throughout your pregnancy.
Of course, there's never any expectation to book both services. Whether you choose massage therapy, doula support, or both, you'll receive the same thoughtful, personalized care.

Do Extended benifit plans cover birth doula costs?
Unfortunately, most extended health plans do not currently cover birth doula services. However, coverage is slowly becoming more common, so it's always worth checking with your provider.
Some families are also able to use Health Spending Accounts (HSAs) or wellness benefits to help cover the cost. If you're unsure, I recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to ask what your plan includes.
