Prenatal and Post Partum Massage FAQ's

Is massage safe during pregnancy?
Yes! Massage can be safely enjoyed throughout most pregnancies. Every treatment is adapted to your stage of pregnancy, your comfort, and how you're feeling that day. If you have a high-risk pregnancy or any concerns, I'm always happy to discuss whether massage is appropriate for you.
Can I have a massage during the first trimester?
Yes! This is one of the most common questions I get. In most pregnancies, massage during the first trimester is completely safe.
There are a lot of myths and outdated beliefs that suggest otherwise, but the research doesn't support avoiding massage simply because you're in your first trimester.
If you have a high-risk pregnancy or aren't sure if massage is right for you, please feel free to reach out. I'm always happy to chat before you book.
How will I be positioned during treatment?
Early in pregnancy, most clients are comfortable lying face down, and you're welcome to do so if it feels good for you. Sometime between about 16 and 21 weeks (often a little earlier with subsequent pregnancies and a little later with first pregnancies), most people find face-down positioning is no longer comfortable. At that point, we'll switch to a very cozy side-lying position, supported with lots of pillows. It's incredibly comfortable and gives me great access to your back, hips, legs, and shoulders.
Can I receive massage right up until my due date?
Absolutely! In fact, I encourage clients to book appointments into their 41st week, as many pregnancies go longer than expected. I'd much rather you have an appointment booked and cancel it because you've had your baby than not have one when you're 40 weeks, sore, and wishing you did. If you happen to go into labour and miss your appointment, I think that's a pretty good reason.
When can I have my first postpartum massage?
Whenever you feel ready. Whether you've had a vaginal birth or a Cesarean birth, treatment can be adapted to your stage of healing. For some clients, that's just a few days after giving birth, while others prefer to wait weeks or even months. There's no right or wrong time to come in.
Can I have a massage after a C-section?
Absolutely! It may take a little longer to feel ready to leave the house after a C-section, and that's okay. Whenever you're ready, I'd be happy to support your healing and recovery. We'll tailor your treatment to where you are in your recovery, and when you're ready, we can also incorporate C-section scar treatment if it's something you're interested in.
Can I bring my baby to my appointment?
Absolutely! I love when clients bring their babies. It often means I get a few baby snuggles while you're getting on or off the table, which is definitely one of the perks of my job!
That said, if you have someone you trust to watch your baby for an hour, I encourage you to take that opportunity. Having a little uninterrupted time can give you the chance to truly relax and focus on yourself for a change.
If not being able, or not wanting, to leave your baby is a barrier to getting the treatment you need, then please bring them with you.
What if my baby cries or needs to be fed during my treatment?
That's all part of having a baby join us!
If I can help while you relax, I'm happy to do so. Over the years I've done everything from tickling little bellies with my feet while giving a massage to popping soothers back in, opening snacks, cuddling babies, and even changing diapers (don't worry...I washed my hands afterwards!).
If your baby needs to be fed, we can sometimes make it work with you lying comfortably on your side while continuing your massage if you're breastfeeding. Otherwise, we'll simply pause your treatment for a few minutes and then carry on once everyone is happy again.
Postpartum life isn't always predictable, and that's okay. We'll make it work.
Can getting a Massage make me go into labour?
If I could put someone into labour by giving a massage, I'd be a millionaire!
The reality is that there isn't anything I can do during a massage to start labour before your body and your baby are ready. As you get closer to the end of your pregnancy, massage can absolutely help you feel more comfortable, relaxed, and supported. My hope is that by helping your body feel its best, we're setting you up for a positive birth and postpartum experience whenever labour begins.
I've never had a massage before. Is pregnancy a good time to start?
Absolutely! Many of my prenatal clients are receiving massage for the very first time. I'll explain everything as we go, and your treatment will always be adapted to your comfort level.
Do you use a pregnancy massage table with a hole for my belly?
No. I don't use pregnancy tables with belly cut outs. Early in pregnancy, you're welcome to lie face down if you're comfortable. Later in pregnancy, I use a cozy, well supported side lying position with lots of pillows. Not only is it incredibly comfortable, but it also gives me much better access to your back, hips, and legs so I can provide a more effective treatment.
Can massage help with pelvic pain or SPD?
Yes! Pelvic pain is very common during pregnancy, and massage can often help reduce muscle tension, improve comfort, and support the changing demands on your body. Every treatment is tailored to your individual symptoms and stage of pregnancy.

Still have a question?
I'd much rather you ask than wonder! If you don't see your question here, feel free to send me an email. I'm always happy to help.
